San Francisco CFC

  • Contest: Chivas USA Rebrand Competition (closed)
  • Submitted by: Francis87
  • Generic Description: When the Chivas moved away from LA, they quickly found a new home in Fog City.
The \"#twitterpark\", the soon-to-be-built \"heir\" of Candlestick Park, will be home to the San Francisco CFC, the new MLS franchise born from the ashes of the Los Angeles-based, Guadalajara-branded \"Goats\".

The team pays homage in many ways to an illustrious European side - nine-time Italian champions Genoa CFC, the oldest surviving team in the Boot, having been founded in Columbus\' hometown in 1893.
Genoese immigrants arrived and dwelled in SF in its the very early days, giving a noteworthy contribution to its social and economic growth: \"Genova\", for example, is the birthplace of the jeans, and the origins of the founder of today\'s Bank of America, Amadeo Giannini, are to be found in nearby Chiavari.

The first \"heritage\" sign is the name of the team, \"CFC\". No \"Cricket and Football Club\", though: the SF version means both \"California Football Club\" and \"Club de Fútbol de California\".
The second one is the red-blue combo. Combined with the \"side\" color, golden yellow, it also has many meanings. It means glory (gold) through unity and cooperation, no matter of the spoken language (Spanish - red - or English - blue). It also means the fire of the Phoenix, the City\'s symbol, and the Bay sea surrounding it, with a golden gate (rectius, a Golden Gate) to grant access to it. And it means earthly passion and sky-limited ambitions, too, all within a Golden State gem.
The third is the \"quartered\" home kit, which is an iconic Genoa CFC standard.
The fourth is Cesco (\"CHESS-coe\") the griffin, the team\'s mascotte, a symbol of earth-and-sky might and wealth defense, and a stable feature of Genoese city heraldry since almost ninety decades. And of course a Genoa CFC symbol since twelve.

In the diamond-shaped logo, the four-point star resembles the four cardinal directions, as a perennial memento to be open to challenges, in US and abroad, and to football fans from everywhere.

The Genos, as fans start calling them, will soon go live: their first friendly match in Kezar Stadium will be a Bay Derby against fellow MLS side San Jose Earthquakes.
