Hi All. Had a brief chat with a few users on twitter about getting some kind of weekly kit comp running on the site so I thought I'd create this post to get a bit of a discussion running.
Well since the league didn't make it far,I don't know if this will; but it would be a good idea, since we already have a weekly crest competition that's doing well.
@Hendo this will definitely be better in terms of participation - it means that people can skip weeks if they're too busy and not have any negative consequences, whereas if you did that in the league you'd lose points.
@blueskinrulez Monthly probably isn't enough to keep momentum.
I was thinking to have it weekly with the team nominated on a Friday and entries open until the Sunday of the following weekend. It creates a bit of overlap between contests but also gives about 10 days and 2 weekends to work on designs
@Smn Jms Dsn If the voting format is the one usually used here (where the community votes), I believe you could both administer and participate, with no problems.
Anyway, I can help with the organization in the future, but I won't be able to do it in the next couple of months, since I'm full of work to do until the end of the year.
@Gigidag69 this is always an interesting question. Own brands are great for really fresh and original ideas but they can exclude some designers who perhaps don't have a personal brand idea yet. Also, using existing brands is a good exercise in making kits true to life and exploring new but realistic design directions. I think both should be allowed - but maybe have a rule where certain weeks are 'own brand' kits and certain weeks are the brand currently used by the team for that round? Would like to hear people's thoughts
Yes, the biggest problem for me is not knowing which team should I design for, a competition could solve that, something like a ongoing KOTW comp would be perfect.
I realy don't like fantasy brands for some reason, and those weeks when they are the theme I will probably skip. Don't know why but they annoy me :)
I thought I'd propose a few different ideas I had for the comp and see what the feedback is. Ideally I'd like to get something running this week to strike whilst the iron's hot.
Option 1
The same as the weekly crest comp currently being run very well by Ziko. All kits entered are included in the voting.
Option 2
The winner of the previous week's comp becomes the judge for the next week and chooses the team to be designed. Shortlists 4-6 kits which go to public vote. This means that the winner can't enter the week they are the judge. Process to be facilitated by comp administrator.
Timelines
Weekly - Team to be announced on Thursday and entries open for 1 week. Voting to take place Thursday - Sunday.
Bi-Weekly - As above but new comp occurring every two weeks.
Double Weekend - Team to be announced on Friday and entries open until the following Sunday allowing approx. 10 days to post designs. Voting to take place Monday – Thursday. This will create weekend overlaps with the new and expiring comp.
Bi-Weekly / Double Weekend – Combination of the previous 2 options. Team to be announced on Friday with entries open until the following Sunday. Voting to take place Monday – Thursday with winner declared before new comp starts.
Rules
- Voting open to all DF Members - Voting compulsory for all entrants to ensure we get good numbers in the vote (suspensions to apply for entrants who don’t vote without prior notice). - Kit rules to be decided on a weekly basis (ie. sponsors, brands, colours, free designs, etc) for more interesting challenges - Suspensions to apply for inappropriate comments/behaviour
Of course, open to comments and suggestions but ideally I’d like to see a show of hands for Option 1 or Option 2 for the voting and for which timelines works best. If there’s no clear winner by Friday/Saturday I’ll make an executive decision and run with it.
@Smn Jms Dsn I liked all options and timelines. IMO, option 2 is the best one, but it might be unpractical. In option 2, there's a chance that the "judge" (winner of the previous week) in a particular week isn't very active, taking too much time to choose the team and creating his shortlist, possibly messing with the schedule. So even though option 2 seems the better option (mainly because it awards the winners), I'd choose option 1 for practical reasons.
As for the timeline, my favourites are bi-weekly or double weekend, which gives more time for the designers, resulting in better designs and more competition.
Rules are also ok, although I feel that making voting compulsory (and especially suspending those who don't vote) is a bit extreme.
@Smn Jms Dsn I vote option 1. Option 2 is too much of a hassle. I think the time frames should be one week of submitting designs and one week of voting, overlapped by the next designing week (basically the same as CRCW, but maybe starting on a different day of the week). This time frame means that we don't need to wait for voting to end to start designing the next kit.
@Smn Jms Dsn I'd go with option 1... mainly because that way, everyone has a chance since different designers have different tastes and can't be objective when choosing a shortlist. Bi-weekly would be ideal, since a kit takes much more time to design than a crest,if you ask me.
@Smn Jms Dsn I vote Option 1, it would be much less hassle and allow the competition to run as smoothly as poss. In terms of timescale, Double Weekend sounds like easily the best option to me - it allows two weekends for people to work on their kits, but there's a quick enough turnover to prevent the competition stagnating.
Thanks for the feedback guys. I've got a good idea in my head about how the comp is going to look now. Going to run with Option 1 / Double Weekend timeline.
I'm also taking a bit of inspiration from FIFA 17's Squad Building Challenges too with different themes and criteria applying each week. Some weeks may be influenced by real world news, others will provide a creative challenge whilst there will also be some straight forward comps.
To help me put together the first challenge (team and kit already decided and to be revealed tomorrow), I'd love it if you guys could give some suggestions for what will need to included in each week's design brief. So far I have:
Kit: Home, Away, Third etc... Brand: Adidas, Nike, Real World, Fantasy etc... Sponsors: Chest, Sleeve, League etc...
