@ardifadli Hagia Sophia? No way! The emblem of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality was designed by Metin Edremit. The lower part of the emblem shows the Bosphorus, which separates the town into two parts and combines two continents (Europe and Asia). The city walls of the historical town are shown on each side. The famous mosques of İstanbul and their minarets, which constitute a major item in the town's tourism potential, are symbolized as they are seen in the Istanbul skyline. The seven triangles in the middle of the emblem represent the seven hills on which Istanbul was built.
@Broack Of course, you are right. I made a mistake. This was the original emblem for Istanbul used on the crest of Istanbul Buyuksehir, the predecessor to Basaksehir. I think you are right on the meaning of the symbol.
@ConceptFootball Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi is a multi-sport club of the metropolitan municipality of Istanbul, founded in 1990 which still exists. Büyükşehir Belediyesi translates as Metropolitan Municipality. In 2014, the football section of the municipality was bought by the sponsor Medipol and moved it to a new stadium in the Başakşehir district of Istanbul. Now there are two different clubs: Istanbul Başakşehir FK, founded in 2014, not to be confused with Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi SK! I am Albanian with Turkish origins and I know football in Turkey very well. You should know that in Istanbul, football teams are are named by the based district: Galatasaray is the team of the Galata district, Fenerbahce is the team of the Fener district, Beşiktaş is the team of Beşiktaş district, and Başakşehir is the team of Başakşehir district. Büyükşehir is the metropolitan team.
I must have become confused as the Istanbul Basaksehir Wikipedia page says the club, was founded in 1990 as Istanbul Büyüksehir Belediyespor, but also lists Büyüksehir Belediyespor as a separate club. This is why I was under the impression the Büyüksehir was the predecessor to Basaksehir. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C4%B0stanbul_Ba%C5%9Fak%C5%9Fehir_F.K.
Sorry, for some reason I am unable to use the S with the cedilla below.
Also, on the Wikipedia page of Istanbul Büyüksehir Belediyespor, the link to the clubs football branch takes you to Istanbul Basaksehir's page, which caused my to believe that the football branch of Istanbul Büyüksehir is Istanbul Basaksehir. I was wrong?
Wikipedia is not always the most reliable source of information. As I said, Istanbul Başakşehir FK it originates from the football section of the Istanbul Büyüksehir Belediyespor multi-sport club (IBB), bought by Medipol. Istanbul Büyüksehir (IBB) no longer has a performance football section, only youth club. IBB has the main focus on other sports such as volleyball. Büyüksehir means Metropolitan and is a public club owned by the metropolitan administration. That is why it uses the metropolitan emblem with 7 hills. Başakşehir is a private club owned by Medipol based in Başakşehir district which uses another emblem. Başakşehir inherited from the IBB the colors and the place in Süper Lig. Istanbul Büyüksehir (IBB) played its matches on the state-owned Olympic Stadium. Başakşehir play on their own stadium "Fatih Terim", 7 kilometers away. As I said, Büyükşehir Belediyesi translates as Metropolitan Municipality and you can find also Izmir Büyükşehir Belediyesi or others....
