The head of the lady Liberty has been pounded heavily into a top of the shield - that is a very first feeling at a first glance. It’s a mind bugging how the logo was accepted by a team and everyone missed out on that. Just terrible logo and in no shape and form screaming about the fact that is a women team - nothing points to that . Also , I feel that a lady Liberty hides behind a shield - another huge misfit. Being a new Yorker for many years - this logo failed miserably to represent us , as we’ve never hide nor being scared . And lastly , there are seven ( not five ) rays on the head wear of lady Liberty .

Design can be recieved differently, and can also be about the taste of the individual. Here's how i see it:
Regarding the logo, it's a football logo, it doesnt need to state wether it's a Men's og Women's team. How many of the logo/crests we do in here, or football logos in general is gender specific?
The head or top of the statue of liberty, is not seen as something being hidden, but more like a crown on top of the shield, referring to the area or city where this football team belongs.
I get your point about the spikes, but in this context, it's not important to have all 7 visualized, If there was only 3 or 2 spikes it wouldn't have made sense, but logo design is about simplifying, and here it's easy recognizable that it represents the Statue of Liberty and thereby New York.
