This crest is ok but nothing out of the ordinary, one wanders if you need to British so your designs are to get a fear valuation here on this design site. I admit though the crest looks god in embroidered form but that’s all, the crest design in itself is no better or worse then many other Aston Villa crest that have been put in hear. Average design in my opinion.
The reason I liked donny's original design was that it had a retro feel due to the shape being similar to their old badge yet used the chequer board pattern that Villa have recently adopted,
The design works well because it's clean, simple and sticks to the traditions of the club..
To say that the only stand out feature to this design is the embroidery effect is a bit harsh.
The embroidery effect is pretty simple to achieve. It was actually Tim1902 that used it on this site first on his Man Utd badge. It's just a program called drawSTITCH embroidery effect.
I do the badges in illustrator and then import them into the program, pretty straight forward really. Not sure what other programs it's compatible with.

Well Steevo I have not seen this old crest you are a fearing to, the one I have seen have a lot wider circles then is used here. As far as the cheeked pattern concern then I can’t see Aston Villa using that in coming years even thug it is used to day, therefore in my opinion it is not wise to use it in the crest if it is meant as future crest for the club. In my opinion this crest is no better or verse then other similar designs, I have to admit that I can’t see much new in this design and do not think the changes in the Lion have improved it in any way, finally Steevo I have not said it was a bed logo I just pointed out the fact that this is no better or verse then what others have done in their effort to redesign Aston Villas crest in the past. I hope you do not take my criticism to badly it is well meant and I am trying t be honest here, I usually do not criticise others designs as it is weary difficult and the taste in design is different from person to person. Thanks for the information regarding the brooder
Classy design, I really like that. I spent ages trying to get an authentic look when I used the Drawings embroidery effect programme as it sometimes missed bits of the design off. I found I had to export the crest at a fairly low size to get realistic results and reconstruct several attempts at it in photoshop to get it looking as realistic as possible.
