For the 366th stage of the Kit of the Week (KOTW) challenge, something a little different was decided upon.
In fact, Skyebaggie had the Weatherfield County Football Club (FC) chapter as a “curveball for non-Brits”, and we think that’s fair.
Because, if you’re not aware, Weatherfield County are a fictional team from the British soap opera, Coronation Street.
Perhaps it was a risk, but it certainly paid off.
Ten designs were entered - not a record by any means, but quality trumps quantity and there was plenty of quality.
For instance, RedCardConcepts gave County their very own take on Celtic’s famous “Bumblebee” look, Dan808 had Manchester-based Classic Football Shirts sponsoring a local side - Weatherfield is based on Greater Manchester’s Salford - and rozzimos, for a lovely touch, included Hilda Ogden’s flying ducks as an Easter egg of a supplier.
In the end, though, none of these designs made it onto the podium. That ended up being reserved for, once the votes were counted, ONI, thanks to a W pattern that brings to mind a Manchester United shirt of the early 1990s, Oakleighman, with an entry that has just enough going on - beautifully measured - and, winning the day, SSmithDesigns, whose creation just, well, looks great, and is a huge improvement on what the make-believe side are purported to wear.
