What you see at the top of this page is not the crest of Futbol Club Barcelona.
No, handing its designer a three-peat in the Crest Redesign Competition Weekly (CRCW), the above badge is a concept created by Aegon and its similarity with the Catalan side’s current on-shirt identity speaks volumes.
As does the relative lack of participation in the 301st CRCW stage. As does the IRL rejection of an initials-less update to the current crest a few years ago.
Narci and SSmithDesigns actually attempted a compromise between those two designs, running Barça’s famous “Blaugrana” striping behind the initials and having the latter floating above the shield respectively, and while both of those and the other entries were superb, it just had to be Aegon in the end.
It ain’t broke, so we needn’t have tried to fix it, but how prophetic of Aegon to mount the design onto a(n almost) white backdrop...
