The Parramatta Eels are based in the Sydney suburb of Parramatta. The Parramatta District Rugby League Football Club was formed in 1947. They were a powerhouse team in the late 1970's to mid 1980's, winning 4 premierships in 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1986.
Parramatta's name is Aboriginal and commonly translated as 'the place where the eels lie down' or 'head of waters', hence the Eels nickname.
