No - United could wear black shorts (as they often do) and Southampton white. Then the Saints kit would give an overall impression of whiteness (especially if stripes were left off the back) and the United kit would have hardly any white at all.

Yeah, looks like some people have been doing their "overall clash" homework. Well, not Denis, as he coined the term, I believe.

Cheers for the comments guys, I did consider switching shorts colours and also socks colours, neither looked as good or as near to the teams true identity of the time as what I did finally submit. Personally I don't find that this clashes anyway.

Is this 'overall clash' you mention a regulation as I am sure that there have been many occasions over the years where this has been overlooked?
If not then what relevance does it have to this competition as the point is to accommodate the traditional strips, i assume within the regulations of the time surely?

That's a very good point, Collet. The "overall clash" is not a regulation per se, although it does seem to play an increasing part in the thinking of officials, which is a good thing in my opinion.

For me, the standard approach of avoiding any kit element clashes is redundant and whilst it may have been the attitude of the time, it would give us kits which, for me, would still be unsatisfying, so I'd say avoiding the "overall clash" is the ideal way to go with it.
